When The Numbers Don't Count

If you have ever spent time relating with God and studying His words, then you are undoubtedly familiar with the Psalmist's words, "Teach us to number our days that we may put our hearts to wisdom." After all, you are here to do same.

Following the mind of Solomon in proverbs, it is safe to say that wisdom is like a liberal homeowner who builds her house and prepares her table, inviting all and sundry for generous bites of her meal. It is like a flowing water that never runs dry.

If wisdom is like a house, however, I believe it is held up by certain pillars. One is the fear of God. Others are prudence, knowledge, discretion, eternal value, understanding and righteousness.

Wisdom is what makes the numbers count. It is ironic but it is true that when you take out wisdom from the number of days you live, or the measure of all you possess, it becomes quantity without quality.

When the numbers don't count is when we don't find the necessary satisfaction out of our endeavours and it continually gets frustrating to even wait on God.

Speaking of waiting on God, without wisdom, it is usually easier said than done. Because when we are faced with silence in the waiting room and it seems the door to God's office is not bulging, we may be discouraged. Hence, the need for wisdom to walk through the waiting process and doing what we should be doing when we should.

Apparently, nothing beats knowing what to do, when to do what is to be done, how to do it and knowing why you are doing it in the first place. It is tiring when you have to gropple with your hands in the dark and in the end, your efforts do not bear fruit.

On the other hand, one can have a little measure and it means a lot because of the inherent wisdom in such measure. Our days here are brief and if lived in wisdom from above, they count to something in God.

How then do we apply our hearts to wisdom?

Every application is dependent on the first pillar of wisdom. Every other pillar follows suit when the first is in place.

The first step to making the numbers count is having the fear of God. And no, this is not synonymous to being afraid of God. It is a matter of reverence, constant surrender to His reign.

Based on our existing fear of God, our knowledge is informed by Him. We seek to know as He knows and ignorance becomes history.

Righteousness is usually seen as the right standing with God and I side with that. It makes so much sense that you are righteous when you're standing on God's side. So much sense.

Prudence, Understanding, discretion and eternal value automatically fall in line.

It seems all we now have to do is watching for whatever pleases God and ensuring we put to use what we find.
